Pam Klein

American, b. 1944

Pam Klein tells color stories. From her earliest memories, she has experienced the world primarily through color—how it shifts with time, light, and atmosphere, and how it alters our physical and emotional state. Educated at Pratt Institute and influenced by artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse, Rockburne, Rothko, and her mentors Robert Natkin and George McNeil, Klein uses color as her primary language rather than as mere description.

Working in oil, acrylic, and gouache, she builds layered, often linear abstractions that explore transparency, depth, and rhythm. Her paintings hover between minimalism and abstraction, inviting viewers to slow down and experience color as an active, living presence.

A longtime Color Theory and Painting educator in New York City and the Shenandoah Valley, Klein’s teaching continually informs her studio practice. Each painting begins as an open inquiry into what color can make us feel, remember, and sense, beyond what we can name.
