Jovan Karlo Villalba is a contemporary artist best known for his dreamlike landscape paintings that seemingly oscillate between our perception of the physical world and the his energetic reimagining of it. Villalba fuses in a visual language painting’s venerable fascination, since Romanticism, with the energies of nature and industry. Blake, Turner, Delacroix, and Matta are the evangelists of this fusion whose ‘Eternal Delight’ aligned the imagination with the forces of the world. Villalba freely embraces this alignment as he does painting itself. From the foundry of his imagination Villalba brandishes the steel of sword, engine, and reflection, and exploits his canvas or steel support materials accordingly.
